Service days that fall on or after a recognized holiday will be delayed one day that week. Service days that fall before a holiday remain on their normal schedule.
Yard Waste Exception
Any scheduled special yard pickups follow the standard one-day holiday delay.
If a holiday is not listed (such as Veterans Day or Martin Luther King Jr. Day), collection is not affected and will proceed on schedule.
Observed Holidays
!Contamination Tips
Unbagged Recyclables Only
Never put your recyclables in plastic grocery bags or trash bags. Always place items like cardboard and cans loosely in your recycling bin, as plastic film wraps around sorting machinery and causes severe jams.
Keep Hazardous Waste Out
Motor oils, tires, car batteries, pool chemicals, and wet paint cannot be thrown in regular household trash. These items pose a fire risk and require specialized hazardous waste drop-off.
No Food-Soiled Paper
While clean cardboard is accepted, greasy pizza boxes, paper towels, and used napkins should go directly into the trash. Food residue will ruin entire batches of clean paper recyclables.

About Sun City Waste Management
Understanding Sun City's Private Collection System
Sun City is a large, unincorporated active-adult community, which means it does not have a centralized municipal sanitation department. Homeowners must independently subscribe to a permitted private hauler—traditionally Parks & Sons of Sun City, Inc. Because it operates on an open market, all billing, special pickups, and service issues are handled directly between the resident and the sanitation company.
Navigating Legacy Underground Trash Containers
A defining and historic feature of many original Sun City properties is the use of underground trash containers. For residents utilizing this legacy setup, haulers collect bagged waste from the immediate surrounding area. To prevent the accidental removal of personal property, homeowners must ensure that nothing they wish to keep (like garden tools or decorative pots) is placed within 10 feet of the underground can.
Disposing of Heavy Citrus Fruit
Sun City properties are famous for their mature, fruit-bearing citrus trees. When disposing of fallen or excess oranges, lemons, and grapefruit, residents must place the citrus in a separate bag or container above ground rather than hiding it deep in a standard bin. To protect sanitation workers from severe lifting injuries, each citrus bag or container must strictly weigh less than 50 pounds.
Safe Handling of Cactus and Thorny Trimmings
Maintaining a desert landscape frequently requires pruning prickly agave, cholla, and other cacti. Parks & Sons strictly mandates that all cacti and thorny trimmings be placed inside throwaway cardboard boxes and securely taped shut. This prevents loose thorns from flying out and injuring collection crews. Note that these throwaway boxes will not be returned to the resident.
Early Morning Desert Heat Protocol
To beat the intense Arizona summer heat, sanitation crews begin their residential routes exceptionally early. Whether you use curbside automated barrels, alley pickup, or underground cans, all trash and recycling must be placed out by 5:30 a.m. on your day of service. Haulers highly recommend setting your materials out the night before to ensure you are not skipped.
