Never toss batteries or battery-embedded electronics into any of your curbside carts. When the collection trucks compact the waste, batteries can get crushed, spark, and cause massive fires. Take them to a local HHW facility instead.
Drop the Plastic Bags
Plastic bags and film wrappers are the number one enemy of the recycling sorting facility in Sacramento County. If you gather your recyclables in a plastic bag indoors, dump the items loosely into the blue cart and throw the empty bag into the garbage.
Avoid Tanglers in the Blue Bin
Hoses, electrical cords, chains, and old clothing should never go into your recycling bin. These items wrap around the automated sorting screens and can severely break the recycling machinery.

Free Curbside Used Oil Pickup
Disposing of hazardous automotive fluids requires special care, but the county makes it highly convenient. Foothill Farms residents can set out used motor oil, oil filters, and used cooking oil on their regular service day. Simply place the used oil in its original, securely taped rigid plastic container (up to 5 quarts) next to your carts, and ensure oil filters are secured inside a double zip-top bag.
The 'Sort Smart' Way to Recycle
Contamination in the recycling stream is a major issue at Sacramento County sorting facilities. Residents must ensure that all items in the blue recycling cart are completely empty, dry, and placed loosely—never bagged in plastic.
