Placement
Place items at the curb no earlier than 24 hours before the appointment, and by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled day. Keep bulky waste piles at least 6 feet away from your collection carts and vehicles.

General Rule
Sacramento County does not observe holiday delays for residential curbside collection. Service continues as normal on all federal and state holidays.
Yard Waste Exception
Organics are collected weekly on your normal scheduled day, including all holidays.
Because collection occurs on holidays, you must ensure your carts are placed at the curb by 6:00 a.m. even on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.

Keep the Air Flowing in Recycling
Never bag your recyclables. Bagged items on the processing line are treated as trash and sent straight to the landfill. Break down boxes, crush jugs, and leave everything loose in the blue cart to maximize space and prevent sorting jams.
Tanglers Do Not Belong in Bins
Garden hoses, electrical cords, chains, and clothing hangers might seem like they contain recyclable metal or plastic, but they are notorious 'tanglers' that shut down the processing equipment at the local recovery facility. Always throw these in the gray garbage cart.
Avoid Wish-Cycling Cartons and Pods
Wax-coated takeout containers, single-use coffee pods, and foil-lined cartons (such as juice, broth, or soup boxes) cannot be processed in your organics or recycling carts. They must go directly into the gray garbage cart.

Do not place any plastics, including standard bio-plastics, in the organics bin. Only BPI-certified ASTM D6400 compostable bags are permitted if you choose not to toss materials loosely.
Cart Placement and 14.5-Foot Clearance Requirements
Sacramento County utilizes automated collection trucks, making proper cart spacing critical along Vineyard's neighborhood streets. Carts must be rolled to the curb by 6:00 a.m. with exactly 3 feet of clearance between each bin and 6 feet from obstacles like parked cars or mailboxes. Furthermore, because the automated mechanical arms lift the bins high in the air, residents must ensure a 14.5-foot overhead clearance from tree canopies or low-hanging utility wires.
Bulky Waste and the Rolling 12-Month Reset Window
Vineyard households are granted one complimentary bulky waste pickup appointment for up to 5 cubic yards of material per 12-month period.
