Holiday Schedule

General Rule

If an observed holiday falls on a weekday on or before your regular pickup day, collection services will be delayed by one day for the remainder of that week.

Yard Waste Exception

During the active season, yard waste collection follows the exact same holiday delay schedule as garbage and recycling.

If a holiday falls on a weekend, the regular weekday collection schedule remains unaffected.

!Contamination Tips

Keep Meat and Dairy Liquids Out of Compost

While Batavia allows you to mix food scraps with your yard waste, this is strictly limited to plant-based scraps, eggshells, and baked goods. Meat, poultry, seafood, bones, oils, and liquid dairy are strictly prohibited as they attract pests and ruin the compost.

Tires Require a Sticker and Prep

You can actually dispose of car tires curbside as bulk items in Batavia! However, the tire must be completely removed from the metal rim, and a prepaid disposal sticker must be affixed to each individual tire.

Never Bag Your Recyclables

A top cause of recycling contamination is placing paper, plastics, and glass into plastic garbage bags. These bags get tangled in the sorting facility's gears. Always leave recyclables completely loose in your Groot recycling cart.

Seasonal Information

Spring

March - April

Batavia offers two free weeks of yard waste collection at the start of the season (typically late March through early April). During this two-week window, no prepaid stickers are required for properly prepared yard waste bags or cans.

Winter

December

During the entire month of December, residents can participate in a free Leaf Collection program. Leaves placed in brown Kraft yard waste bags will be collected on your scheduled service day without needing a prepaid sticker.

Winter (Post-Holidays)

January

Groot Industries provides a free curbside collection of one live Christmas tree per household at no additional cost during the first two weeks of January. Ensure all lights, ornaments, and plastic tree bags are removed.

About Batavia Waste Management

Hybrid Volume-Based Waste Collection in Batavia

The City of Batavia operates a highly flexible refuse collection system through Groot Industries, designed to encourage recycling and waste reduction. While standard refuse collection requires designated Groot carts, residents have incredible flexibility. Any extra garbage bags or 35-gallon personal cans that exceed the cart's capacity can be placed at the curb, provided they weigh under 50 pounds and feature a prepaid City of Batavia disposal sticker.

Curbside Food Scrap Composting Options

Batavia actively supports landfill diversion by allowing residents to mix acceptable food scraps right into their yard waste containers. From April through November, you can toss fruits, vegetables, bread, pasta, and coffee grounds into your yard waste subscription cart, brown paper lawn bags, or stickered 32-gallon rigid containers. Just make sure to keep out meat, dairy liquids, and plastics to ensure a clean compost stream for Kane County facilities.

Unlimited Bulk Item Disposal with a Twist

Getting rid of large furniture in Batavia is incredibly convenient compared to neighboring municipalities. You do not have to wait for a special amnesty day—the city allows for unlimited bulk item collection every single week on your regular trash day. The only requirement is that one prepaid disposal sticker must be affixed to each oversized item, such as a mattress, chair, or sofa.

Handling DIY Construction Debris

If you are remodeling your Batavia home, Groot will collect small amounts of 'Do-It-Yourself' construction and demolition debris at the curb alongside your regular trash. To ensure the safety of the collectors, all debris like lumber or drywall must be cut to 4 feet or less in length, bundled or bagged securely, and weigh under 50 pounds per bundle. Nails and sharp edges must be removed or hammered flat.
