The first bulk item each week is free. Additional bulk items, items exceeding 50 pounds, white goods, or electronic waste require a special pickup arrangement and will incur an additional fee from Groot.
Holiday Schedule
General Rule
If an observed holiday falls on a weekday on or before your scheduled collection, your service will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the holiday week. If the holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed on Monday.
Yard Waste Exception
Yard waste collection is subject to the exact same one-day holiday delay as regular refuse and recycling.
If the observed holiday falls on a Saturday, the normal weekly collection schedule remains completely unaffected.

Never Bag Your Recyclables
When you put your recyclable items into plastic bags, they cannot be successfully sorted at the Groot Elk Grove MRF. The bags tangle in the sorting machinery, meaning your entire bag of recyclables will be redirected to a local landfill.
Tape Your Battery Contacts
Before bringing rechargeable or button batteries into the Village Hall for safe recycling, you must cover the contact points of each battery with masking tape, or place them in individual zip-lock bags to eliminate the risk of sparking and fire.
Black Plastic Goes in the Trash
Although they are made of plastic, black plastic containers cannot be detected by the optical sorting technology used at local recycling centers. Always wash out black takeout containers and throw them in your standard refuse cart.
Seasonal Information
Spring
AprilElk Grove Village hosts a Special Spring Leaf Collection typically in early April. Residents should rake leaves directly into the street about 2 feet away from the curb. Do not include branches or grass, as these will damage the collection sweepers.
Late Spring to Fall
April - December 15The Waste Management yard waste program includes the removal of small branches. Bundled branches up to 3.5 inches in diameter and no more than four feet in length are picked up free of charge, requiring no yard waste sticker.
Autumn
October - NovemberFall leaf collection is managed by the Public Works Department and is divided into nine collection sections. If it snows on your designated leaf collection day, trucks will be diverted to plow streets and leaf pickup will be rescheduled.

Alternatively, those who generate a lot of organic waste can enroll in a $175 annual subscription that covers both yard waste and household food scraps, turning curb-side composting into a seamless weekly routine.
Convenient Battery Drop-Off at Village Hall
Illinois law strictly prohibits placing loose batteries in residential recycling bins due to severe fire hazards at processing plants. To accommodate residents, Elk Grove Village offers a free, secure battery drop-off program at the Village Hall Community Development counter. No. All persons owning or occupying residential real estate within Elk Grove Village are legally required to dispose of their garbage and refuse through the municipal waste system. Residents may not independently haul their refuse to the landfill.
How do I participate in the Large Branch Collection Program?
The Public Works Department collects large branches (3.5 to 8 inches in diameter) from non-evergreen trees. To participate, you must call Public Works at (847) 734-8800 by 4:30 p.m. on the Friday prior to your scheduled pickup week to get your address placed on the route list.
What happens if my trash cart or recycling bin gets damaged?
Groot provides single-family homes and townhomes with both a waste and recycling cart at no additional cost. If your cart gets cracked, loses a wheel, or sustains other damage, you must contact Groot Customer Service directly at 847-734-6400 to request a repair or a replacement bin.
Where can I safely recycle Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs)?
CFL bulbs contain trace amounts of mercury and should be carefully recycled. While standard household CFLs can be brought to designated drop-offs, commercial or industrial CFLs are not accepted. If a bulb breaks in your home, carefully wipe it up with a wet paper towel, place the contents in a sealed bag, and throw it in your standard trash—never vacuum it.
