!Contamination Tips

Avoid Number 6 Plastics

While Glendale Heights accepts a wide range of plastic materials (Numbers 1-5 and 7), Number 6 plastics—including styrofoam cups, packing peanuts, and clear takeout clamshells—are strictly prohibited in your recycling cart.

Never Bag Your Recyclables

Keep all paper, cardboard, and containers loose inside your Republic Services recycling cart. Materials tied up in plastic grocery bags will not be sorted at the facility and are automatically discarded as standard trash.

Empty and Rinse Food Containers

Cardboard boxes and plastic containers heavily soiled with food residue contaminate the entire recycling load. Ensure jars, bottles, and food boxes are rinsed or scraped clean of all organic waste before tossing them in.

About Glendale Heights Waste Management

Streamlined Zoned Collection Services

The Village of Glendale Heights has partnered with Republic Services to manage residential waste, breaking the village down into color-coded service zones. Neighborhoods in the Purple region receive collection on Wednesdays, the Orange region on Thursdays, and the Blue region on Fridays. This zoned approach minimizes heavy truck traffic and reduces neighborhood noise throughout the week.

Free Curbside Electronics Recycling

One of the most progressive features of Glendale Heights' waste program is the free curbside electronic recycling service. While many cities require residents to transport e-waste to distant drop-off centers, Republic Services collects these items right from your driveway on your second regularly scheduled collection day of the month. To participate in this program, residents must call Republic Services at least 24 hours in advance to schedule the pickup.

Strict Cart Placement Guidelines

To maintain clean streetscapes, the Village enforces strict ordinances regarding when and where carts can be placed. Waste and recycling bins may be placed at the curb no earlier than 2:00 PM on the day preceding your scheduled collection and must be removed by 7:00 AM the day following collection. Carts should be placed approximately one foot behind the curb with the wheels facing your home, leaving two to three feet of clearance between them.

Seasonal Yard Waste Collection

From April 1st through November 30th, Republic Services manages weekly yard waste removal alongside standard refuse collection. During this active season, residents can set out organic debris like grass clippings and leaves. Additionally, following the winter holidays, natural Christmas trees under five feet long are collected curbside at no extra charge through the first two full weeks of January.

Bulk Waste and Large Appliance Limits

Republic Services collects most standard household garbage, but oversized or excessively heavy items require special attention. Any individual item weighing over 50 pounds—such as large furniture or major appliances—will not be removed unless the driver is notified ahead of time, as route trucks are generally operated by a single driver. Always call customer service prior to your pickup day to ensure your bulky items are safely accommodated.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I put my garbage carts out on the curb in Glendale Heights?

According to Village ordinance, you may place your refuse and recycling carts at the curb no earlier than 2:00 PM on the day preceding your collection day. Emptied carts must be removed from the curb by 7:00 AM on the day following collection and must be stored in your rear or side yard.

How do I throw away an old television or computer in Glendale Heights?

It is illegal in Illinois to throw electronics in your regular trash. However, Glendale Heights offers a free curbside electronics pickup on the second regularly scheduled collection day of the month. You must contact Republic Services at 847-981-0091 at least one day in advance to schedule the pickup.

Does the village collect yard waste year-round?

No. Republic Services only collects curbside yard waste from April 1st through November 30th on your regularly scheduled garbage day.

What do I do if I have a couch or appliance heavier than 50 pounds?

Because Republic Services collection trucks generally only have one driver, individual bulk items weighing over 50 pounds will not be removed unless the company is notified beforehand. Call customer service prior to your normal pick-up day to arrange for large appliances or particularly heavy furniture.
