Holiday Schedule

General Rule

Prince George's County uses a 'slide' schedule. If a county-observed holiday falls on a weekday, collections for that day and the remainder of the week are pushed back by one day.

Yard Waste Exception

Because yard trim and organics are universally collected on Mondays, any Monday holiday (like Labor Day or Memorial Day) will shift organics collection to Tuesday for that week.

County facilities are typically closed on major holidays, and no bulk appointments for scrap tires or appliances will be scheduled on those days.

Seasonal Information

Summer

Late June to September 30

The 'Beat the Heat' program goes into effect during these months. Ensure all trash, recycling, and bulk items are at the curb by 5:00 a.m., as haulers start their routes an hour early to avoid extreme midday temperatures.

Winter

December to January

Live Christmas trees are collected as part of the normal Monday yard trim and organics pickup. Remove all lights, tinsel, and ornaments before placing the tree at the curb.

Fall

October to November

During heavy leaf drops, use two-ply paper yard bags to handle the overflow that won't fit in your green organics cart. Wet leaves in bags or cans must weigh less than 25 pounds so they don't break during lifting.

Local Tips & Community Info

Turning Your Old Cans into Cash Around Clinton?

Did you know some of your recyclables can actually put a few bucks back in your pocket? While Maryland doesn't have a statewide bottle and can redemption program for those plastic bottles and aluminum cans you might collect, Prince George's County does have options. Keep an eye out for local scrap yards that might buy certain metals, or check out community recycling drives. Sometimes, specialized events pop up for electronics or other items that can be processed for cash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to schedule an appointment for bulk trash in Clinton?

Under Prince George's County's new system, residents can place up to four (4) standard bulky items—like furniture and encased mattresses—next to their trash cart on their regular collection day without an appointment. However, you must still call 311 to schedule a specialized pickup for scrap tires and white goods (large appliances).

What goes in the 32-gallon green wheeled cart?

The green cart is dedicated to organics. This includes all food scraps (like coffee grounds, fruit peels, bones, and food-soiled paper) as well as regular yard trim. The county collects this cart every Monday.

Are there special requirements for throwing away a mattress?

Yes. For the health and safety of the collection crews, any mattress or box spring placed at the curb for bulky trash collection must be entirely enclosed in a protective plastic cover that is zipped or taped shut.

Does the garbage collection time change during the summer in Clinton?

Yes. Through the county's 'Beat the Heat' initiative, collection hours shift from late June through September 30. During this window, haulers start their routes at 5:00 a.m. instead of the usual 6:00 a.m. Be sure to put your bins out the night before so you don't miss the truck.
