Holiday Schedule
General Rule
For most Thursday and Friday holidays (e.g., Thanksgiving, Christmas), collections shift one day forward. A Thursday route slides to Friday, and a Friday route slides to Saturday.
Yard Waste Exception
If a holiday falls on a Monday (such as Memorial Day or Labor Day), yard waste collection is canceled entirely for that week. It does not slide to Tuesday.
Trash and recycling schedules generally remain unaffected for Monday holidays; only the Monday yard waste route is canceled.

Seasonal Information
Winter
December to JanuaryLive Christmas trees are collected loosely at the curbside during Monday yard waste routes throughout the month of January. They do not require paper bagging, but all lights, tinsel, and ornaments must be completely removed.
Spring/Summer
March to AugustAs yard maintenance peaks in the warmer months, be cautious with invasive or hazardous plants. Bamboo, thistle, poison ivy, poison oak, and insect-infested plant materials are explicitly banned from the Monday yard waste pickup.
Holiday Shifts
Year-RoundWhen a major holiday lands on a Friday (like Juneteenth, Christmas, or New Year's Day), Friday routes slide to Saturday. Conversely, if a holiday lands on a Monday, Monday yard waste is entirely canceled for that week.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I dispose of a broken grill or washing machine in Havre de Grace?
The City of Havre de Grace Department of Public Works offers a specialized collection for bulky metal items. You can schedule a pickup for items like washers, dryers, heaters, grills, and swing sets by calling the DPW directly at (410) 939-5009.
Can I put my yard waste in plastic trash bags?
No, plastic bags are not permitted for yard waste. The city highly prefers that you use compostable paper yard bags. You may also pack yard waste loosely in a rigid trash can, provided the total weight of the can and its contents does not exceed 50 pounds.
What happens if it rains and my yard waste can gets wet?
If you leave grass clippings in an open can during a rainstorm, crews will likely not collect it. Havre de Grace enforces a strict 50-pound limit per container, and wet grass easily exceeds this weight threshold. Always ensure your reusable cans have tight-fitting lids.
Is yard waste collected on Monday holidays like Memorial Day?
No. Unlike regular trash and recycling which often slides to the next day during a holiday week, if a recognized city holiday falls on a Monday, the yard waste pickup is completely canceled for that entire week. It resumes the following Monday.
