Holiday Schedule

General Rule

If an observed holiday falls on a weekday, Syracuse Haulers will delay collection by one day for the remainder of the week (e.g., a Thursday pickup will move to Friday).

Yard Waste Exception

Brush collection is performed by the exact same hauler and follows the identical one-day holiday delay schedule as regular refuse.

Always verify the exact delay schedule on the Syracuse Haulers website, as weekend holidays (like a Saturday Independence Day) may not trigger a delay for your route.

!Contamination Tips

Never Tie or Bundle Cardboard

Under the current automated collection system, cardboard must be broken down and placed completely inside your green recycling cart so the lid can shut. Do not leave tied bundles of cardboard next to the bin, as the mechanical arm cannot pick them up.

Package Broken Glass for Safety

If you have broken glass or mirrors, do not toss the shards in the green recycling cart. Wrap the broken pieces carefully in thick newspaper, seal it with tape, label the package 'broken glass,' and put it in your regular trash cart to protect the sanitation workers.

Keep Plastic Bags Out of the Brush Pile

When preparing yard waste for your bi-weekly brush collection, you must use biodegradable paper lawn bags or an old, open trash can. Any leaves or grass clippings placed in plastic garbage bags will be tagged and left at the curb.

Seasonal Information

Spring

March to April

The bi-weekly brush collection season officially kicks off at the end of March. Ensure your winter storm debris and branches are trimmed to five feet or less and bundled with string or hemp twine—never wire.

Summer

June to August

If you miss your scheduled bi-weekly yard waste pickup during the peak landscaping season, town residents can drop off clean brush at the Highway Department on Clemons Road on Mondays between 7:00 AM and 2:30 PM. Commercial landscapers are strictly prohibited.

Winter

December to February

Curbside brush collection officially ends the week before Christmas. During snowstorms, keep your automated trash and recycling carts clear of snowbanks and at the edge of your shoveled driveway to ensure the truck's mechanical arm can safely reach them.

About Manlius Waste Management

Enrolling in the Manlius Trash and Brush Districts

Residents living in the Town of Manlius—specifically outside the incorporated villages of Fayetteville, Manlius, and Minoa—must actively enroll in special tax districts to receive curbside service. Unlike standard municipal garbage, this opt-in program adds a specific fee directly to your January property tax bill. In 2026, single-family homes pay a flat annual rate for weekly trash and recycling, plus a separate fee for bi-weekly brush collection. You must coordinate directly with the town's Trash and Brush Liaison to establish or cancel this specialized service.

Strict Automated Cart Requirements

Since migrating to an automated collection system in May 2022, Syracuse Haulers requires precise bin placement so their mechanical arm trucks can operate safely. All household trash and single-stream recycling must fit entirely within the provided 65-gallon or 95-gallon carts, and the lids must be fully closed. The carts need to be rolled to the edge of the driveway with the handles facing your house, leaving adequate spacing between the two bins. Any overflow bags left outside the containers will be completely ignored.

No Free Municipal Bulk Collection Days

Unlike many neighboring municipalities that host annual community 'clean-up days,' the Town of Manlius does not offer any free curbside bulk waste collection. Disposing of old furniture, mattresses, appliances, or large electronics requires scheduling a special pickup directly with Syracuse Haulers for an additional out-of-pocket fee. Alternatively, residents can personally transport their large items to the Camillus Landfill or utilize OCRRA's drop-off sites, keeping in mind that extra fees apply for freon-containing items and tires.

Bi-Weekly Brush Pickup and Highway Drop-Off

If you enroll in the separate Brush District, Syracuse Haulers will collect your yard waste on a bi-weekly schedule running from late March through December. There is no official limit on the total amount of brush you can place at the curb, provided the sticks do not exceed five feet in length or three inches in diameter. If you have an unusually massive pile, the town requests you call Syracuse Haulers in advance so they can dispatch the proper equipment. Additionally, town residents can bypass the curb and drop off unbagged yard debris at the Town of Manlius Highway Department on Mondays.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign up for trash and brush collection in the Town of Manlius?

If you live outside the villages of Fayetteville, Manlius, and Minoa, you must enroll in the town's special Trash and Brush Districts. You can sign up by contacting the Town of Manlius Trash and Brush Coordinator at 315-637-8815. The fee is then added to your annual January property tax bill.

Can I leave extra trash bags next to my automated cart?

No. Syracuse Haulers uses an automated arm to lift the carts. All trash and recycling must fit entirely inside the provided 95-gallon or 65-gallon carts with the lids fully closed. Overflow bags placed on the ground will not be picked up unless you have pre-paid for a special collection.

Does Manlius have a free bulk trash pickup day?

No. The town does not sponsor a free heavy-trash cleanup day. Residents must contact Syracuse Haulers directly to arrange a special paid pickup, or transport the items to an OCRRA facility or the Camillus Landfill themselves.

What are the rules for bi-weekly brush collection?

Brush must be placed in biodegradable paper bags or a rigid open container with a maximum weight of 50 pounds. Branches must be tied with string or hemp twine and cannot exceed five feet in length or three inches in diameter. Plastic bags are strictly prohibited.
