Holiday Schedule

General Rule

If a holiday falls on a weekday, trash and recycling collection will typically be delayed by one day for the remainder of that week. Weekend holidays do not impact the weekday schedule.

Yard Waste Exception

Superior Waste applies the same one-day delay rule for yard waste collection on major holidays.

Always check the Syracuse Haulers website or the Town of Salina social media pages for emergency delays caused by severe winter weather.

!Contamination Tips

The 'Clamshell' Rule

Plastic berry, salad, and bakery cartons (known as clamshells) are not recyclable in Onondaga County. Put these directly into the regular trash.

Keep Tanglers Out

Never place garden hoses, extension cords, chains, or string lights in your recycling bin. These items wrap around the sorting gears at the local OCRRA facility and cause major mechanical shutdowns.

Reattach Your Caps

When recycling milk jugs, detergent bottles, or glass jars, make sure to empty and rinse them out, then screw the caps and lids back on before tossing them into the bin.

Seasonal Information

Winter

January

Christmas trees are collected by Superior Waste during the first few weeks of January on your normal pickup day. Remove all lights, stands, and decorations. Do not wrap the tree in plastic or leave it trapped behind snowbanks.

Spring to Fall

March - December

Curbside yard waste collection runs from mid-March through mid-December. Be sure to place your yard waste on the opposite side of the driveway from your regular trash carts.

Winter

December - March

During heavy snowfalls, make sure your automated carts are easily accessible from the street. Automated truck arms cannot reach over or through large snowbanks to grab your bins.

About Salina Waste Management

Town of Salina Automated Trash Collection

The Town of Salina operates under an automated, containerized collection system managed by Syracuse Haulers. Every residence is provided with commercial-grade 65- or 95-gallon carts designed specifically for automated truck arms, which helps streamline curbside pickup and keeps neighborhoods cleaner. Carts must be placed at the curb the night before or by 6:00 a.m. on your collection day.

Strict OCRRA Recycling Guidelines

As part of Onondaga County, Salina strictly adheres to the OCRRA (Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency) recycling rules. All cardboard must be flattened, and all acceptable paper, plastic, and glass should remain loose in your recycling cart. Bagging recyclables in plastic bags is strictly prohibited and may result in an orange 'Oops' sticker and a skipped collection.

A Dual-Hauler System for Yard Waste

While Syracuse Haulers takes care of your daily refuse and recyclables, the Town of Salina maintains a separate contract with Superior Waste Removal specifically for yard waste. Brush and yard clippings are collected from mid-March to mid-December on your regular collection day, but must be placed on the opposite side of the driveway from your household trash to avoid confusion between the two fleets.

Quarterly Large Item Pickup Events

The Town of Salina coordinates a quarterly bulk pickup schedule for large household goods like furniture and mattresses. If you have an urgent need to dispose of bulky materials outside of these town-sponsored quarterly dates, you do not have to wait; you can call Syracuse Haulers directly to arrange a special, one-off pickup for an additional fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who provides residential trash collection in the Town of Salina?

Syracuse Haulers provides automated trash and recycling collection for the town, while Superior Waste Removal handles the seasonal yard waste pickups.

Can I use plastic bags for my yard clippings?

No. Yard waste must be placed in rigid plastic or metal containers (up to 50 lbs) or in biodegradable paper lawn bags. Plastic bags are strictly prohibited for yard waste.

How do I dispose of old TVs and computers in Salina?

Electronics are banned from curbside trash and bulk pickups. You must take televisions, computers, and monitors to an OCRRA-approved e-waste drop-off location or a participating retailer.

What happens if I have more trash than my cart can hold?

Because the trucks use automated arms, any overflow items left outside or on top of your Syracuse Haulers cart will not be collected. If you regularly have excess trash, you can call Syracuse Haulers to rent an additional cart or arrange a special pickup for a fee.
