Holiday Schedule
General Rule
If a Waste Management observed holiday falls on a weekday, collections for that day and the remainder of the week are delayed by one day. For example, a Thursday holiday pushes Thursday pickups to Friday.
Yard Waste Exception
Public Works seasonal branch and leaf pickups may also be delayed during observed township holidays. Always check moontwp.com for the seasonal schedule.
If an observed holiday falls on a Sunday, the regular weekday collection schedule remains completely unchanged.

!Contamination Tips
Keep Glass Out of the Curb Bin
Moon Township does not accept glass in the curbside single-stream recycling toters. To recycle clear, brown, or green glass food and beverage containers, you must drop them off at the Moon Township Public Works Garage on Stevenson Mill Road.
Only Plastics #1 and #2
Pay close attention to the recycling triangle on your plastics. MTMA strictly accepts only #1 (PET) and #2 (HDPE) bottles and jugs. Black food trays, yogurt tubs (#5), and clamshell containers must be thrown in the trash.
Avoid Tanglers and Film
Never place plastic grocery bags, garden hoses, or dog chains in your recycling toter. These items wrap around the sorting gears at the recycling facility and can cause severe damage or force the plant to shut down.
Seasonal Information
Autumn
October - NovemberDuring the peak fall season, the Moon Township Public Works Department operates periodic leaf collections. All leaves must be placed in biodegradable paper bags. Do not use plastic bags, or your leaves will be left behind.
Winter
JanuaryThe Public Works Department generally runs a Christmas tree pickup program after the holidays. Trees must be completely bare—remove all ornaments, tinsel, stands, and plastic tree disposal bags before placing them at the curb.
Spring & Summer
April - AugustSummer lawn maintenance generates excess grass clippings. Because these are not considered bulk items or eligible for separate yard waste pickup, residents must bag their clippings (under 40 lbs) and fit them completely inside their WM trash toter.
About Moon Township Waste Management
Strict Limits on Curbside Toter Volume
In Moon Township, all residential refuse collection is managed by the Moon Township Municipal Authority (MTMA) through a dedicated contract with Waste Management (WM). The primary rule residents must follow is that all weekly household trash must fit entirely within the provided WM toter. If you generate extra garbage bags that will not fit inside the cart, they will not be picked up for free. You must contact WM at 1-800-866-4460 at least 48 hours in advance to arrange and pay an additional fee for extra bagged garbage collection.
Navigating the Monthly Bulk Item Week
Rather than allowing bulk items every week, Moon Township streamlines its heavy debris collection into one designated week per month, highlighted in yellow on the official MTMA calendar. During this specific week, households can place up to two bulky household items, such as a mattress or an old couch, at the curb alongside their normal toter. Importantly, a completely separate WM truck is dispatched for bulk items, so if your standard garbage is picked up and your couch remains, do not worry—the bulk truck will arrive by the end of the day.
Handling Grass Clippings and Yard Waste
Disposing of organic waste depends heavily on the type of debris. MTMA strongly encourages "grasscycling" or using the Moon Park compost program, but if you must dispose of grass clippings, they must be bagged in quantities weighing less than 40 pounds and placed inside your WM trash toter. Curbside yard waste, such as leaves and branches, is managed periodically by the Moon Township Public Works Department, not WM. When participating in seasonal leaf pickups, residents must strictly use biodegradable paper bags—plastic yard bags are entirely prohibited.
The "At Your Door" Special Collection Program
One of the most unique benefits for MTMA solid waste customers is the inclusion of the WM "At Your Door" special collection service. Because electronic waste (like televisions and computers) and household hazardous waste (like automotive fluids, pool chemicals, and oil-based paint) are legally banned from the standard landfill stream, residents can schedule a direct-to-door pickup. By calling 800-449-7587 or visiting WMAtYourDoor.com, a technician will come directly to your Moon Township home to safely pack and remove these hazardous materials at no extra charge.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I leave extra trash bags next to my toter?
No. The weekly solid waste pickup is strictly limited to what fits inside the Waste Management provided toter with the lid closed. If you have extra bags that do not fit, you must call WM at 1-800-866-4460 at least 48 hours in advance to arrange a special pickup for an additional fee.
How do I throw away a television or computer in Moon Township?
Electronic waste is legally banned from Pennsylvania landfills. MTMA customers can use the WM 'At Your Door' special collection program by calling 800-449-7587 or visiting WMAtYourDoor.com to schedule a free, direct-to-home pickup of electronics and household hazardous waste.
Why didn't they pick up my bulk item today?
Moon Township only allows bulk item pickups during one designated week per month (marked in yellow on the MTMA calendar). Additionally, bulk items are collected by a completely separate truck, so it may arrive at a different time of day than your regular refuse truck.
Are glass bottles accepted in the curbside recycling toter?
No, glass is not accepted in your curbside recycling cart. You can take clear, brown, and green glass food and beverage jars to the dedicated glass recycling dumpster located at the Moon Township Public Works Garage at 1115 Stevenson Mill Road.
