State Mandate
Bag all trash to prevent pests.

Holiday Schedule
General Rule
If a major holiday disrupts service, routes push back one day (e.g., Tuesday routes move to Wednesday, Wednesday to Thursday, etc.) and Friday routes move to Saturday. The normal schedule resumes the following Monday.
Yard Waste Exception
Monthly brush zone schedules and bulky item pickups may also experience delays; residents should call Republic Services to confirm specific delays during holiday weeks.
Hold times for Republic Services can be 20 to 30 minutes during high call volume, particularly in the days surrounding a holiday.

Ditch the Plastic Bags in Recycling
The most critical rule for your green recycling bins or carts is keeping plastic bags out. Thin plastic grocery bags tangle and jam the sorting equipment at the Materials Recovery Facility, leading to costly plant shutdowns.
Secure Your Cardboard
If you are utilizing the traditional 18-gallon green recycling bin rather than a cart, you must flatten all corrugated cardboard boxes and place them directly underneath the bin so they don't blow away. Tape left on the boxes is acceptable.
Safely Package Broken Glass
While intact glass bottles and jars are perfectly fine for recycling, broken mirror glass or window glass is not. Wrap broken glass securely in newspaper and tape, or place it inside a box marked 'broken glass' before throwing it into your regular trash bag.

Winter
December - JanuaryFor two weeks following Christmas, live trees (free of ornaments, stands, and plastic bags) can be recycled into free mulch at the Grand Prairie Landfill or IKEA drop-off stations. Flocked trees sprayed with artificial snow are not accepted for recycling.
Spring
March - MayDuring heavy spring thunderstorms, fallen tree limbs up to 10 inches in diameter and 5 feet in length can be left unbundled for the monthly brush zone pickup. Remember, your brush pile cannot exceed the overall size of a VW Beetle.
Year-Round
January - DecemberHousehold hazardous waste (HHW) is never allowed at the Grand Prairie Landfill or in curbside bins. Residents can attend special city-sponsored collection events, or transport their HHW year-round to the Environmental Collection Center (ECC) in Fort Worth.

The 2026-2027 Automated Cart Transition
The City of Grand Prairie is undergoing a massive shift in how it handles residential waste. Starting in April 2026, the city entered Phase 1 of transitioning from manual bag-and-bin collection to a fully automated cart system operated by Republic Services. Phase 1 homes now receive a 95-gallon garbage cart and a 95-gallon recycling cart, serviced just once a week on Wednesdays. Phase 2 will bring these new rolling carts to all remaining single-family households on or before October 2027.
Current Twice-a-Week Garbage and Green Bins
For residents not yet phased into the new cart system, the city continues its long-standing traditional schedule. Garbage is collected twice a week—homes north of Warrior Trail are serviced on Tuesdays and Fridays, while homes south of Warrior Trail are serviced on Mondays and Thursdays. Meanwhile, all citywide recycling happens strictly on Wednesdays using the iconic 18-gallon green bins provided by the city.
Monthly Brush Zones vs. Weekly Bundles
Grand Prairie offers residents two distinct methods for organic brush disposal. For immediate removal, you can cut and tie brush into 50-pound, 6-foot bundles and set them out on your regular weekly garbage day. Alternatively, you can stack unbundled tree limbs (up to 10 inches in diameter and 5 feet long) at the curb during your neighborhood's assigned once-a-month brush zone week. Just ensure the loose pile is no larger than a standard VW Beetle.
Weekly On-Demand Bulky Waste Pickup
The city does not restrict bulky household waste to a predefined monthly schedule. Grand Prairie residents can call Republic Services any week to schedule a free, on-demand curbside pickup. This service explicitly covers old appliances (like washers and refrigerators) and furniture (like sofas and chairs). However, construction and demolition materials such as carpet, fencing, and sheetrock are strictly banned from curbside bulk and must be hauled directly to the Grand Prairie Landfill.
