Neighborhood Specific Schedules

Virginia curbside collection runs weekly from Monday through Friday. Your exact pickup day depends on your local county or city zoning schedule.

Virginia DEQ regulations strictly prohibit lead-acid batteries, motor oil, and whole waste tires in curbside bins.

Holiday Schedule

General Rule

Republic Services operates on a normal schedule for most minor holidays. Collection schedules only shift if your pickup day falls on Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's Day. Updates are always posted on the South Riding Facebook page.

Yard Waste Exception

If a major holiday falls on a Monday during peak season, yard waste collection will typically be shifted by one day.

Always check the South Riding Proprietary website for real-time weather delays, especially during severe winter storms or high-wind events.

!Contamination Tips

Mark Your Paper Lawn Bags

When setting out yard waste on Mondays, Republic Services requires that you either use a reusable container labeled 'Yard Waste' or standard compostable paper bags clearly marked with a large 'X' so drivers can easily identify them.

Do Not Bag Your Christmas Tree

Live Christmas trees are collected curbside during the first two Mondays in January. You must remove all lights, ornaments, and the stand. Crucially, never place the tree inside a large plastic bag, and if it exceeds 8 feet, you must cut it in half.

Keep Plastic Films Out of the Recycling

Never place your clean recyclables inside a plastic garbage bag. Plastic films jam the gears at the Loudoun County materials recovery facilities. Keep all cardboard, plastics, and metals completely loose in your lidded recycling cart.

Seasonal Information

Spring/Summer/Fall

March 1 to December 24

Mandatory yard waste separation is in effect. All organic lawn debris must be kept out of your household trash and placed at the curb on Mondays following the 10-bag/bundle limit.

Winter

January to February

During the deep winter months, the dedicated yard waste collection routes are suspended. Any minor yard debris you generate during this time can simply be placed inside your standard household trash cart.

Winter

First two weeks of January

Christmas trees are collected at the curb during the first two Mondays in January. Alternatively, trees can be dropped off at the Meadows Pool parking lot collection area through mid-January.

About South Riding Waste Management

Navigating South Riding's HOA-Managed Trash Services

Because South Riding is a planned census-designated place rather than an incorporated city, its residential waste collection is uniquely managed through the South Riding Proprietary. The community holds a master contract with Republic Services to handle all household garbage, single-stream recycling, and yard waste. Residents are provided with lidded, wheeled bins (typically 65 or 96 gallons) and must have their carts securely placed at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on their scheduled collection days, or the night before.

Strict Yard Waste Limits and Peak Season Rules

From March 1 through December 24, South Riding enforces a mandatory yard waste recycling season. During this peak time, Republic Services runs dedicated yard waste trucks every Monday. However, strict volume limits apply: households are capped at a maximum of 10 bags, containers, or bundles per pickup. Branches must be cut to four-foot lengths or shorter, kept under six inches in diameter, and firmly tied with rope or twine. During January and February, dedicated yard routes are paused, and any winter yard debris can simply be placed out with your normal household trash.

Coordinating Bulk Item Pickup for a Fee

When clearing out a garage or replacing old furniture, standard curbside collection will not take your heavy debris. In South Riding, bulk waste removal is not included in the baseline HOA dues. You must pre-schedule a special pickup by emailing Republic Services directly with your name, address, HOA name, and a photo of the item. Be prepared to pay an additional out-of-pocket fee of $85 per large item, and keep in mind that appliances containing Freon will not be collected unless tagged by a professional as Freon-free.

Proper Disposal of Paint and Household Hazards

Unlike many municipalities that completely ban paint from curbside carts, South Riding allows the disposal of latex and water-based paints right in your regular trash—if you follow specific safety steps. You must mix the leftover liquid paint with kitty litter, mulch, or a commercial paint hardener, and allow it to dry completely into a solid block. Once entirely solid, place the open can directly inside your household trash cart. Oil-based paints, however, remain classified as hazardous and must be taken to the Loudoun County Landfill.

Accessing the Loudoun County Landfill for E-Waste

For items that Republic Services will not touch—such as electronic waste, old televisions, motor oil, large construction debris, and automobile tires—South Riding residents can utilize the Loudoun County Solid Waste Management Facility located in Leesburg. The facility features a dedicated Recycling Drop-off Center open Monday through Saturday, offering safe disposal for hazardous household chemicals, batteries, and even food waste composting.
