Black Bin (Trash)
All non-recyclable and non-compostable household refuse must go in the black barrel. Ensure the lid is completely closed and wheels are facing the curb/property line.

General Rule
If an observed Burrtec holiday falls on a weekday, residential collection services will be delayed by one day for the remainder of that week.
Yard Waste Exception
The one-day holiday delay applies equally to the green organics barrel and the blue recycling barrel.
If the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, there is no service interruption or delay. Your normal collection day will remain the same.

Proper Barrel Placement and Timing
To ensure a seamless pickup process by Burrtec's automated trucks, all three barrels must be wheeled to the curb no later than 6:00 a.m. on your designated collection morning. Placement is critical for the mechanical arms to operate safely. Residents must leave at least two feet of space between each barrel and keep them a minimum of three feet away from any parked cars, mailboxes, or utility poles. Always position the bins so that the wheels are touching the curb and the lid hinges face away from the street.
Food Waste and Organics Guidelines
Highland is fully aligned with California's organics recycling initiatives, but with a specific local rule for food waste. While grass clippings, leaves, and small branches can be tossed loosely into your green organics barrel, all food scraps must be securely bagged before being placed inside. This bagging requirement helps reduce odor, prevents pest infestations, and keeps the green bins sanitary. Blue recycling bins, however, should never contain bagged items; all cardboard, glass, and rigid plastics must remain loose to ensure they can be properly sorted at the facility.
Free Bulky Item Pickups
Disposing of old furniture, broken appliances, or large electronics is easy and free for Highland residents. You are entitled to four separate bulky item pickups every calendar year at no additional charge. During each scheduled pickup, you can leave out up to five large items. This service happens on your regular trash day but is handled by a specialized collection truck. Holiday Delays and Rent-A-Bin
Burrtec observes six major holidays annually: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. If any of these holidays fall on a weekday, your neighborhood's collection schedule will be delayed by exactly one day for the remainder of that week. Weekends are unaffected. For residents tackling major home renovations or deep spring cleaning, Burrtec also offers a convenient three-cubic-yard rent-a-bin service, delivering a temporary dumpster directly to your driveway for special household projects.
Special Roll-Out Services
The City of Highland and Burrtec are committed to ensuring waste collection is accessible to everyone in the community. If you are physically unable to roll your heavy barrels to the curb each week due to age, injury, or disability, you can apply for the free Roll-Out Service. Once approved by the customer service department, a Burrtec driver will personally retrieve the bins from your side yard or driveway, empty them, and return them to their original spot at absolutely no extra cost.
