Holiday Schedule
General Rule
If an observed holiday falls on a weekday on or before your scheduled collection day, service will be delayed by exactly one day for the remainder of that week.
Yard Waste Exception
Because yard waste is not collected as a separate stream during the winter holidays, New Year's and Christmas only affect the garbage and recycling schedules.
Homewood Disposal strictly observes these six major holidays; regular Monday-Friday schedules resume the following week.

Utilize the CHaRM Center for Styrofoam
Do not put foam packaging, packing peanuts, or Styrofoam cups in your blue recycling cart. Instead, South Holland residents can drop off #6 Polystyrene (Styrofoam) directly at the CHaRM Center at South Suburban College for specialized recycling.
Avoid the Plastic Bag Trap
While you should always bag your regular garbage to reduce odors, you must never bag your recyclables. Leave your cans, bottles, and paper loose inside the blue-lidded cart so they can be accurately sorted at the Homewood Disposal recovery facility.
Keep Dirt and Rocks Out of Yard Waste
When filling your green-lidded yard waste cart or brown paper bags, ensure that no dirt, rocks, sod, or root balls are included. These heavy materials are classified as construction/landscape debris and will cause your yard waste to be rejected.

AprilYard waste collection officially resumes on April 1. This is also when the specialized bulk item truck begins its seasonal operations, running through the end of October to assist with spring cleaning.

December to MarchDedicated landscape waste pickup is suspended. However, South Holland allows residents to repurpose their green-lidded yard waste toters as secondary garbage carts from December 1st through March 31st.

One of the most unique features of South Holland's waste program is how it handles the winter months. While dedicated yard waste collection runs from April 1 through November 30, residents are permitted to use their green-lidded yard waste toters as extra garbage bins from December 1 to March 31. This provides valuable extra capacity during the winter holiday season.
Seasonal Bulk Item Flexibility
Throwing away large household items is simple in South Holland. Between April 1 and October 31, Homewood Disposal will automatically collect one standard bulk item each week on your regular service day. If the regular refuse truck cannot accommodate the item, the hauler coordinates a secondary truck to swing by later that same day to ensure the curb is cleared.
