Local Tips & Community Info
Turn Your Junk into Cash Right Here in Chillum!
Got some old aluminum cans, scrap metal, or maybe some empty glass bottles lying around? Instead of just tossing them, you can actually get paid for them! While Prince George's County doesn't have widespread bottle/can buyback centers like some states, many local scrap metal yards are happy to take your metal items. You might want to check out places like DC Iron & Metal or similar operations in the wider DC metro area, as they often pay by weight for metals like aluminum, steel, and copper. It's a great way to lighten your load and pocket a little extra dough. Always call ahead to confirm what they accept and their current rates!
Give Your Gently Used Stuff a New Chillum Home
Before you toss out items that are still in good shape, think about donating them! Chillum and its surrounding communities have some fantastic options. The Salvation Army Family Stores are always accepting clothing, furniture, and household goods. There's also the Catholic Charities of Washington, which often needs donations to support their programs. And don't forget about Habitat for Humanity ReStores – they're perfect for finding and donating furniture, appliances, and building materials. Dropping off usable items not only helps others but keeps perfectly good things out of the landfill.
Let's Keep Chillum Spick and Span: Tackling Dumping!
Nobody likes seeing trash illegally dumped in our beautiful Chillum neighborhoods. If you spot any illegal dumping, don't just walk by! Prince George's County has a system for reporting it. You can usually call 311 or check the county's website for specific instructions on how to report dumped materials. Sometimes, community groups organize clean-up events, which are awesome ways to get involved and make a real difference. Keep an eye out for local announcements about these events – pitching in is a fantastic way to show pride in our area and keep it looking its best for everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to schedule an appointment for bulk trash pickup in Chillum?
For standard items like sofas, tables, or bags of small household goods, no appointment is needed. You can place up to four bulky items next to your trash cart on your regular collection day. However, you must schedule an appointment via PGC311 for scrap tires and large appliances (white goods).
Why wasn't my mattress picked up by the bulk truck?
Prince George's County requires all mattresses and box springs placed at the curb to be completely covered in a protective plastic encasement. This is a strict policy to protect the health and safety of the collection crews. If it is not wrapped, it will be left at the curb.
Can I mix food scraps with my yard waste?
Yes. Chillum residents participating in the 'Clear the Curb' organics program can mix food scraps like meat, dairy, and vegetable clippings with their yard trim. These materials must be placed inside the county-issued 32-gallon green wheeled cart for Monday pickup.
What time do I need to put my bins out?
During most of the year, bins must be at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on your collection day. However, from June 30 through September 30, the county implements a 'Beat the Heat' schedule, requiring all carts to be set out by 5:00 a.m.
