Yard Waste Exception
Yard waste follows the exact same holiday shift as recycling and standard trash.
Holidays like Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Juneteenth, and Veterans Day close county facilities but DO NOT interrupt curbside collection schedules. Set your bins out on your normal day.

June - AugustTo protect sanitation workers from severe heat stress, an early collection schedule is implemented. You must have all carts and items at the curb no later than 5:00 AM.
Fall
October - DecemberDuring peak leaf drop, remember that yard waste is collected year-round. Never rake leaves into the street, curblines, or storm ditches, as this directly pollutes the Chesapeake Bay watershed and causes neighborhood flooding.

Local Tips & Community Info
Got Cans to Cash In Around Severn?
While Severn itself might not have a dedicated bottle buyback center right on the block, the state of Maryland has a great program for your empty cans and bottles! Just look for the 'CRV' (California Redemption Value) on many plastic, glass, and aluminum containers. You can take these to redemption centers to get your deposit back. If you've got bigger metal items, places like Metal Management in Baltimore or other scrap yards in the wider Anne Arundel County area often pay for scrap metal. It's a good way to turn your clutter into a little cash!
Giving Your Old Stuff a Second Life Near Severn
Before you toss those gently used items, think about giving them a new home! Goodwill is always a fantastic option, and there are several locations within easy driving distance of Severn, like the one in Glen Burnie on Crain Highway. You can also check out the Salvation Army or the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Millersville, which not only takes donations of furniture and building materials but also uses the proceeds to help build homes in the community. It’s a win-win for everyone!
Keeping Severn Clean: What to Do About Dumping Troubles
If you ever see trash dumped illegally in or around Severn, it's good to know how to report it. Anne Arundel County's Department of Public Works handles illegal dumping. You can usually report it by calling their office or using their online reporting system. They take this seriously, and your report helps them keep our neighborhoods looking sharp. Keep an eye out for county-led community clean-up events too – they’re great opportunities to pitch in and make a real difference right here where we live!

Frequently Asked Questions
When do I need to put my bins out during the summer months in Severn?
Between June 1st and the end of August, Anne Arundel County enforces a summer collection schedule to prevent worker heat stress. You must place your bins curbside by 5:00 AM instead of the usual 6:00 AM.
How do I dispose of a bulky mattress or couch in Severn?
Sofas, mattresses, and small rolls of carpet can be placed at the curb alongside your regular trash on your standard collection day. However, if you are disposing of large metal items or appliances (like refrigerators), you must schedule a special pickup by calling (410) 222-6100.
What are the correct containers for yard waste collection?
You can use compostable paper yard waste bags or reusable metal/rigid plastic containers equipped with handles. If you use a reusable container, it must be marked with a large 'X' on all sides so the crew knows it contains yard waste. Never use fabric bags, plastic bags, or your county-issued yellow recycling cart.
Will my collection be delayed if a holiday falls on a weekend?
Generally, if a major holiday falls on a weekend, it does not interrupt the weekday curbside routes. Furthermore, minor weekday holidays (like MLK Day or Veterans Day) close county facilities but do not change the residential pickup schedule. Only six major holidays (New Year's, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Friday, and Christmas) shift the weekly schedule.
