!Contamination Tips
Keep Plastic Bags Out of the Blue Lid Cart
Never bag your recyclables. Plastic film and grocery bags jam the gears at Republic Services' sorting facilities. Place all your bottles, cans, and paper loosely inside your recycling cart.
No Dirt or Rocks in Compost
Your yard waste containers should only contain organic plant matter. Dirt, sod, soil, and rocks add excessive weight, classify as illegal landfill materials, and will cause your yard waste to be rejected.
Proper Freon Appliance Disposal
If you are setting a refrigerator or air conditioner out for bulk pickup, the Freon must first be removed by a certified technician. The item will not be picked up if it does not display the official removal tag.
Seasonal Information
Spring

About Battle Creek Waste Management
Unlimited Weekly Trash and Bulk Collection in Battle Creek
Unlike many municipalities that strictly limit curbside waste, the City of Battle Creek offers residents an exceptional unlimited weekly trash and bulk item pickup through its contract with Republic Services. Homeowners can use their own personal garbage cans (up to 50 pounds) or rent dedicated carts directly from Republic. Just be sure to have all items out by 6:00 a.m. on your designated service day.
Navigating the Opt-In Recycling Program
Battle Creek operates an 'opt-in' model for residential recycling. To receive a dedicated cart featuring a light blue lid, residents must formally register for the biweekly service by contacting Republic Services online or via phone. This initiative ensures that only committed households participate, dramatically reducing the contamination rates of the local recycling stream.
Spring and Fall Cleanup Events
While standard bulk collection explicitly prohibits construction and demolition debris, Battle Creek residents can take advantage of specialized Spring and Fall Cleanup dates. During these specific windows, the city permits the curbside disposal of minor remodeling waste and larger refuse that standard weekly trucks cannot accommodate, providing a perfect opportunity for seasonal home improvements.
Responsible Yard Waste and Pumpkin Disposal
From early April through the first week of December, yard waste is collected weekly on the same day as your trash. Battle Creek mandates the use of 2-ply kraft paper bags or standard 32-gallon containers clearly marked 'Yard Waste Only'. As an added community bonus, whole pumpkins are accepted in yard waste bins during October and November, keeping festive organics out of the landfill.
