Holiday Schedule

General Rule

Collections will NOT be made on noted legal holidays. Trash pickup will be delayed by one day for the ENTIRE township for the remainder of the holiday week.

Yard Waste Exception

Yard waste services are halted from mid-December through March, so winter holiday delays only apply to standard trash and recycling.

Place trash on the curb no later than 7:00 AM on your adjusted pickup day and no earlier than 5:00 PM the evening before.

!Contamination Tips

Bag Shredded Paper in Clear Plastic

While most recycling programs ban plastic bags entirely, Harrison Township has a unique rule for shredded paper: it MUST be placed in a clear plastic bag before going into your recycling cart to prevent it from blowing away.

Don't Jam Your Cardboard

It is essential to fold and cut your cardboard so it loosely fits inside the cart. By township rules, the sanitation driver is not allowed to reach inside the cart to pull out stuck materials. If it's wedged, it gets left behind.

Keep Tissues Out of the Blue Bin

Even though they are technically paper products, tissues, napkins, and paper towels are not accepted in Harrison Township's recycling program. The fibers are too short to be recycled and they often carry food or bio-waste.

Seasonal Information

Spring

April - May

Yard waste collection resumes the first week of April. Gather your early spring storm debris, ensuring all branches are under 2 inches in diameter, cut to 3 feet in length, and tied securely with heavy twine.

Summer

June - August

With elevated recreational activity near Lake St. Clair, ensure that no marine hazards, boat parts, or unauthorized heavy construction items make their way into your household trash limit of 2 cubic yards per week.

Winter

December - March

Yard waste collection officially halts after your collection day during the second week of December. During snowfall, ensure bins are accessible and not placed on top of snowbanks, keeping trash and recycling on opposite sides of the driveway.

About Harrison Charter Township Waste Management

Tringali Sanitation: Harrison Township's Single Waste Hauler

Starting May 2025, Harrison Charter Township transitioned its single-waste hauling contract to Tringali Sanitation. This service covers all single-family homes in the township and is conveniently billed quarterly on your municipal water bill. Residents are required to participate, as there is no opt-out option, ensuring a unified and clean community along the shores of Lake St. Clair.

Preparing Your Refuse for Macomb County Pickups

Trash collection routes in Harrison Township begin bright and early at 7:00 AM, Monday through Friday. Residents are asked to neatly divide their waste by placing regular trash on one side of the driveway, and yard waste or recycling on the opposite side. If you use a hardware-store trash can, it must not exceed 35 gallons or weigh more than 40 lbs, though Tringali offers 90-gallon polycarts capable of holding up to 60 lbs.

Navigating Bulk Waste Along Lake St. Clair

Whether you are doing a spring cleanout or upgrading furniture, Harrison Township makes large item disposal simple. Homeowners are permitted to place up to two large bulk pieces at the curb each week alongside their regular trash. Remarkably, no phone call is required to schedule this; if the main collection truck cannot fit your item, a trailing truck will arrive within 48 hours to remove it.

Harrison Township's Seasonal Yard Waste Program

Because Harrison Township is rich in trees and greenery, managing seasonal yard waste is a priority. The township runs a strict yard waste collection program from the first Monday in April through the second week of December. Residents must use paper yard bags or 35-gallon marked containers. Keep in mind that using a container larger than 35 gallons for heavy compost will void the bin's warranty and it will not be collected.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the weight limit for my trash can in Harrison Charter Township?

If you are using a standard 35-gallon hardware store can, the contents must not weigh more than 40 lbs. If you are using a 90-gallon Tringali Polycart, the combined weight of the container and its contents cannot exceed 60 lbs.

Can I use a 50-gallon bin for my yard waste?

No. Yard waste must be placed in 30-gallon brown paper bags or marked containers no larger than 35 gallons. Placing compost in a bin larger than 35 gallons voids the bin's warranty and it will not be serviced.

Do I need to schedule a bulk pickup for an old couch or appliance?

No phone call is required. You can put out up to 2 bulk pieces per week on your regular trash day. If the item is too large to fit in the standard packer truck, a secondary truck will come by within 48 hours to collect it.

How do I pay for my curbside trash and recycling service?

Single-family homes in Harrison Township cannot opt out of the service. The cost of curbside waste hauling through Tringali Sanitation is automatically billed quarterly via your township water bill.
