Green Cart Bin (Trash)
All trash must be bagged and fit entirely inside the green cart provided by WM. The lid must close completely. Bags left outside the cart will not be collected.

Drop-off is included with your Solid Waste Fee. If the site dumpsters are full, it will close. Excess trash can also be taken to the WM Transfer Station on Baraga Ave for a weight-based fee.
Holiday Schedule
General Rule
Waste Management (WM) provides collection on all holidays in Marquette. Your curbside service day will not be delayed for any holiday.
Yard Waste Exception
Yard waste is managed seasonally by the city through zone collections and drop-off sites, not weekly curbside pickup.
Even on holidays, ensure your carts are at the curb by 7:00 a.m. with wheels facing the curb and away from parked cars.

Rinse and Empty Plastics
Before tossing plastic jugs and containers into your blue cart, ensure they are completely rinsed and empty to prevent food residue from ruining paper and cardboard items in the same load.
Skip the Small Plastics
While larger bottles and jugs are perfect for the Recycle 906 program, small items like plastic utensils, toothbrushes, and straws fall through the facility's sorting screens and must be thrown in the trash.
Clean Aluminum Foil is Acceptable
Unlike many municipalities, you can recycle clean aluminum foil and foil pans in Marquette County. Just ensure there is no baked-on food or heavy grease before putting it in your bin.

MaySpring Brush & Leaf Collection usually kicks off in early May. The city is divided into specific zones, so check the official map for your exact week to place brush and paper leaf bags curbside.
Autumn
September - OctoberThe city hosts a second major yard waste collection in the fall. Early September also marks the community-wide Trash to Treasure weekend to rehome usable household items.
Winter
December - JanuaryChristmas trees can be dropped off through mid-January at Lakeview Arena or Hurley Field inside the orange fencing. Ensure all decorations and stands are completely removed.

Marquette's Comprehensive Waste & Recycling Services
The City of Marquette utilizes a combination of Waste Management (WM) for weekly curbside collections and the municipal public works department for seasonal and drop-off services. Funded by the Solid Waste Fee on your monthly utility bill, this comprehensive program covers your 96- or 64-gallon garbage carts, curbside recycling through the regional Recycle 906 program, and exclusive access to the city’s compost and household rubbish drop-off sites.
Utilizing the Household Rubbish Site
Marquette does not provide a regular weekly curbside bulk trash pickup. Instead, residents paying the solid waste fee can drop off bulky items at the Household Rubbish Site located on Pioneer Road. Open on select days during the week, this site is strictly for non-hazardous household waste. Residents should note that the facility will close for the day as soon as the dumpsters reach capacity.
The Annual Trash to Treasure Weekend
Every September, the city hosts a unique "Trash to Treasure" weekend designed to divert usable goods from the Marquette County Landfill. Residents can place serviceable items like furniture, lamps, and electronics at the curb starting Friday evening. Anything not claimed by neighbors must be removed by Sunday evening; items left behind will be hauled away by the city, and the property owner will be invoiced for the disposal costs.
Seasonal Brush and Leaf Collections
Marquette's beautiful, heavy tree canopy means yard waste is a major seasonal priority. The city conducts strict, zone-based spring and fall leaf and brush collections. During designated weeks, brush must be piled neatly on the street edge (not in the gutter). Leaves can be left loose or placed in biodegradable paper landscape bags. Plastic bags are strictly prohibited and will be left behind by city crews.
Winter Operations and Cart Placement
Heavy Lake Superior snows significantly impact Marquette's street operations. Carts should never be placed in the roadway, in the gutter, or perched precariously on top of snowbanks. To allow both automated garbage trucks and county snowplows safe access to the curbside, the city strictly enforces on-street parking bans during designated daytime hours across its four collection zones.
