Recyclables must be placed loosely into the cart. Do NOT bag your recyclables. Cardboard boxes should be broken down to 2 feet by 2 feet. If your cart overflows, you cannot place loose bags of recycling on the ground; you must request a second cart or use a drop-off center.

Yard Waste Bin
Use standard paper compost bags or maximum 35-gallon rigid plastic/metal cans. Cans must weigh under 50 pounds and feature a green-and-white yard waste sticker, or be clearly marked with a large 'X'. You may put out a maximum of 8 yard-waste containers per week. Plastic bags are strictly prohibited.

Weekly on your regular trash collection day.
Placement
Set bulk items at the curb after 6:00 p.m. the night before or by 7:00 a.m. on collection day. For safety, doors on refrigerators or freezers must be completely removed or heavily taped shut.

Bulk item collection is free for up to two items a week. Construction debris must be hauled to a dump privately at the resident's expense.
Holiday Schedule
General Rule
If an observed holiday falls on a weekday, trash and recycling collections for the remainder of the week are delayed by one day. If the holiday falls on a weekend, the collection schedule is completely unaffected.
Yard Waste Exception
Yard waste is collected alongside regular trash and follows the same one-day delay rules during active season months.
Minor holidays such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Good Friday, Juneteenth, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day do NOT delay trash collection in Livonia.

Loose Recyclables Only
Never put your recycling in plastic bags. Bagged recyclables jam sorting machinery and will be treated as trash. Toss items loosely into your recycling cart.
Keep Dirt and Rocks Out of Compost
Dirt, rocks, stones, and thick sod chunks cannot be processed as yard waste. Placing these in your compost bags or yard waste cans will result in a rejected pickup.
No Foam in the Cart
Styrofoam packaging, including takeout containers and packing peanuts, is never accepted in the curbside recycling program. Place these materials in your standard trash cart.

Late March to Mid-DecemberWeekly separated yard waste collection typically begins in the last week of March (e.g., March 23) and concludes by the second week of December. During the off-season, yard waste is not collected curbside.
Autumn
October and NovemberThe City conducts a specialized bulk leaf pickup program in the fall. Official mailers are typically sent out to residents in mid-October detailing the specific sweep schedules for each neighborhood.
Winter Holiday Adjustments
November, December, JanuaryThanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day will push trash collection back by one day if they fall on a weekday. Note that trucks often run earlier than usual during holiday weeks due to lighter overall loads, so placing carts out by 7 a.m. is critical.

Residents who retained the older dark green GFL refuse carts with tan lids are permitted to use them as secondary recycling containers. Trash and recycling must be out by 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection, but no earlier than 6:00 p.m. the evening before.
Year-Round Hazardous Waste Disposal at ERG
Unlike many municipalities that only offer one or two drop-off events annually, Livonia residents have access to year-round Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and electronic waste disposal. ERG Environmental Services, located at 13040 Merriman Road, accepts items like motor oil, pool chemicals, pesticides, and old computers Monday through Friday. There is a small processing fee of $5 per 100 pounds of waste, which makes safe disposal highly accessible for all residents.
Dedicated Wood Waste Drop-Off
If you are conducting heavy landscaping or tree maintenance, the Mid-Michigan Recycling Center on Glendale Avenue provides a dedicated Wood Waste Disposal Site. Livonia residents can drop off branches, logs, brush, and clean stumps completely free of charge. This is an excellent alternative when you have woody debris that exceeds the limits of standard weekly yard waste collection or bundle restrictions.
Seasonal Brush Chipper Service
For unbundled branches and brush, Livonia offers a specialized chipper service. Between early April and Memorial Day, crews automatically sweep through residential neighborhoods every 15 working days. After Memorial Day and continuing through the first Friday of October, residents must specifically request this chipper service by contacting the DPW or using the online 'Report a Concern' tool. Branches must be neatly stacked at the curb with cut ends facing the same direction.
