Yard Waste Exception
Yard waste and bulk collection follow the exact same delayed holiday schedule as regular garbage.
Trash pick-up will take place as normally scheduled on any holidays not explicitly listed above, such as Columbus Day or Veterans Day.
Observed Holidays
!Contamination Tips
Double-Bag Animal Waste
The Canton Health Department mandates that animal waste, including feces and soiled cat litter, must be wrapped in newspaper and double-bagged in sturdy plastic before going in your trash cart to protect sanitation workers.
Restrict Plastics to #1 and #2
Do not throw all your plastic packaging into the 18-gallon blue bin. Canton’s curbside program strictly accepts only #1 and #2 plastics. Toss yogurt tubs, clamshells, and unnumbered rigid plastics into your standard trash.
Keep Liquids Out
The Sanitation Department explicitly prohibits liquids of any type from being placed out for collection. Liquid spills create a mess on neighborhood streets and can splash on workers. Solidify paints and oils, or dispose of them through specialized hazardous waste drop-offs.
Seasonal Information
Winter
December - FebruaryCrews will collect garbage in all weather unless temperatures drop to dangerously low levels. In such extremes, the city will issue a press release via the website and local media to announce collection suspensions.
Fall
October - NovemberWith the autumn leaf drop, remember that leaves must not be swept into the street. They should be bagged in 45-gallon maximum bags and placed out with yard waste for regular curbside collection.
Spring
March - MaySpring cleaning often means bulky item disposal. Take advantage of your weekly 2-item bulk limit, or contact the city directly to rent an affordable 6-to-8 yard front-load dumpster for massive clean-outs.
About Canton Waste Management
Standardized Municipal Collection in Stark County
The City of Canton's Sanitation Department efficiently manages refuse collection for thousands of local structures every week. By equipping each household with a standardized 95-gallon standard cart, the city aims to keep neighborhoods clean, contain loose debris, and discourage scavenging animals. Residents who have excess garbage can use their own secondary containers up to 32 gallons, provided they have secure lids and handles.
Canton's Unique Municipal Dumpster Rental Program
A standout feature of Canton's waste management system is the ability for residents and landlords to rent affordable dumpsters directly through the city. If you are cleaning out a garage, basement, or rental unit, you can easily secure 6-yard to 20-yard roll-off boxes for standard refuse or construction debris at highly competitive rates, avoiding the need to hire expensive third-party hauling companies.
Simple and Weekly Bulk Item Allowances
To help keep properties free of clutter, Canton allows residents to place up to two large bulky items, such as furniture, at the curb alongside their regular trash each week at no additional charge. Unlike many other jurisdictions, you do not need to call ahead to schedule standard bulk pickups. However, strict sanitary rules apply, including the mandatory wrapping of all mattresses and upholstered furniture in sealed plastic.
Curb Preparation and Timing Guidelines
Timing is strictly enforced by Canton’s crews. Waste must not be placed at the curb any earlier than noon on the day prior to collection, and it must be out by 6:00 A.M. on collection day. Because automated and semi-automated trucks begin their routes early, straggling carts will likely be left behind. Carts and emptied bins must then be removed from the right-of-way prior to 8:00 A.M. the day following pickup.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if my 95-gallon city garbage cart gets damaged or goes missing?
It is the resident's responsibility to store and care for the city-issued 95-gallon cart. If the cart is lost, stolen, or damaged through neglect, residents are subject to a $75.00 replacement fee from the city.
Does Canton require advanced scheduling to throw away a mattress?
No advanced scheduling is required to dispose of a mattress, as it counts toward your limit of two bulk items per week. However, the mattress and box spring must be entirely wrapped and sealed in plastic before being placed at the curb, otherwise it will not be collected.
Can I throw leftover house paint away in my regular trash?
No. The Canton Sanitation Department explicitly prohibits latex and oil-based paints, as well as any other type of liquid waste, from being disposed of in the regular trash unless it has been completely solidified or hardened first.
Does the Canton Sanitation Department handle renovation waste like concrete or shingles?
The regular weekly pick-up does not include construction materials such as asphalt, concrete, bricks, or roofing material under any circumstances. If you have renovation debris, you can contact the Sanitation Department at 330-489-3020 to rent a 14, 15, or 20-yard roll-off container for an additional standard fee.
