General Rule
No collection shall occur on holidays. Collections missed due to holidays will be made on the next scheduled collection day.
Yard Waste Exception
Curbside yard waste is typically collected the day after your regular trash day, so it will shift alongside the holiday refuse schedule.
Materials must never be placed at curbside more than 12 hours prior to your scheduled collection day, even during holiday weeks.

Marion Solid Waste Collection Guidelines
The City of Marion manages residential garbage collection with specific regulations designed to keep neighborhoods clean and efficient. Residents are allowed a maximum of six trash containers per week without incurring extra charges. Each container must not exceed a 32-gallon capacity and is subject to a strict 50-pound weight limit to protect sanitation workers. All general household refuse must be securely bagged in plastic before being placed inside your cans. To ensure you do not miss your pickup, all trash should be placed at the edge of the street or tree lawn by 7:00 a.m. on your designated collection day, but no earlier than 12 hours prior.
Curbside Recycling Program

The city provides a free, hard-plastic recycling bin for new homes, which is easily recognizable and designed for curbside use. You do not need to separate your materials; all approved recyclables can be mixed together in the same bin. Accepted items include clean aluminum beverage cans, metal food cans, corrugated cardboard (broken down and tied in lengths no longer than 5 feet), paper products, and plastics numbered 1 and 2. Marion offers a robust seasonal yard waste collection program running roughly from mid-April through mid-December. During this timeframe, residents can set out up to three biodegradable paper bags or tied bundles of limbs per week. However, the city does not collect grass clippings at the curb. Instead, residents can take grass clippings and excess yard debris directly to Outdoor Resource Supply, located at 560 Barks Road West. This drop-off is completely free for city residents, provided you bring a valid ID or utility bill to verify your address at the site.
Fall Leaf Vacuuming Service
During the autumn months of October, November, and December, the City of Marion deploys specialized leaf vacuum trucks to help residents manage heavy foliage. To take advantage of this service, simply rake your leaves in a neat row along the edge of your street or sidewalk, keeping them out of the storm drains. Alternatively, if you prefer to bag your leaves, the city provides designated leaf bags during these months. Bagged leaves can be placed alongside your regular trash cans and will be picked up during standard sanitation routes.
Large Bulk Disposal and Utility Trailers
If you are cleaning out a garage or replacing old furniture, oversized items require a bit of planning. Discarded carpet must be cut into 5-foot lengths, securely rolled, and weigh less than 50 pounds. For residents with a massive amount of bulk waste that exceeds normal limits, the city offers a convenient Utility Trailer rental program for a minimal fee. The sanitation department will deliver the trailer to your driveway, you load it up, and they haul it away. Please note that hazardous waste, wet paint, tires, and heavy car parts are strictly prohibited from curbside pickup and trailer rentals.

What happens to my trash schedule if a holiday occurs?
The sanitation department does not collect refuse on Sundays or major holidays. If your normal pickup day falls on a holiday, your trash and recycling will simply be collected on the next scheduled business day.
Who do I call if my garbage was missed this morning?
If your trash or recycling was entirely missed by the crew, you must report it to the Sanitation and Streets Department at 740-382-1479 no later than 3:00 p.m. on the day of your collection to ensure recovery.
How can I obtain a replacement or new recycling bin?
Official recycling bins are available for pickup at City Hall. While there is a small deposit fee required for the container, this fee is entirely waived if your property was recently annexed into the city.
