Waste Connections runs routes on almost all holidays. Service is only suspended on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. If your collection day falls on one of these three holidays, service will be delayed by one day.
Yard Waste Exception
The 5-week brush collection schedule continues through most minor holidays, but may experience slight delays during severe weather or major winter holidays.
Garbage and recycling ARE collected on holidays like Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Labor Day. Carts must be out by 6:00 a.m. as usual.
Observed Holidays
!Contamination Tips
Do Not Bag Your Leaves for the Curb
The automated garbage trucks will not pick up extra bags of leaves placed next to your trash cart. Furthermore, the city's brush grapple trucks explicitly do not collect leaves or grass clippings. Yard trimmings must either fit inside your standard garbage cart, be mulched, or be taken to a specialized drop-off.
Keep Plastic Bags Out of the Recycling
Never bag your recyclables. Seguin's sorting facility requires all glass, plastic, and cardboard to be deposited loosely into the recycling cart. Plastic grocery bags wrap around the gears of the recycling facility and can shut down the plant.
Remove Freon from Appliances
If you are disposing of a refrigerator, freezer, or air conditioner during your quarterly bulk pickup or taking it to a collection station, Texas law dictates that the Freon must first be drained and tagged by a licensed professional.
Seasonal Information
Spring
March to MaySpring severe weather can occasionally disrupt Waste Connections schedules. If strong storms roll through Seguin, monitor the City Services app, as high winds and flooding may delay both automated cart collection and grapple truck brush routes.
Autumn
September to NovemberDuring peak leaf-fall, remember that large piles of leaves and bamboo are not considered 'brush' and will be bypassed by the 5-week grapple truck service. Mulch your leaves or slowly feed them into your weekly garbage cart.
Winter
December to FebruaryAfter the holidays, the city typically offers a specialized live Christmas tree collection program. Check the city website in early January for dates. Otherwise, trees must be cut up and placed out during your designated 5-week brush zone schedule.
About Seguin Waste Management
Synchronized Trash and Recycling Collection
In March 2026, the City of Seguin implemented a major service upgrade in partnership with Waste Connections. To accommodate the city's rapid growth, residential garbage and recycling are now collected on the exact same day for all residents. Carts must be placed at the curb or alleyway by 6:00 a.m. on your designated service day. Ensure all refuse is entirely inside the provided carts, as any bags of trash or leaves placed outside or next to the bins will be strictly ignored by the automated collection trucks.
Quarterly Bulky Waste Collection System
Unlike cities that offer weekly heavy trash removal, Seguin operates on a quarterly bulk item pickup schedule. Residents are permitted to place up to two bulky items—such as mattresses, furniture, or appliances without Freon—at the front curb (never in the alley) during their assigned quarter. For households generating more heavy waste, the City Secretary’s Office at City Hall provides up to four free disposal vouchers per year, which can be redeemed at the Post Oak Landfill in Luling.
Unique 5-Week Rotating Brush Pickup
Handling large tree limbs and shrub trimmings in Seguin requires consulting the city's specific 5-zone rotation calendar. Brush collection is managed by dedicated municipal grapple trucks that visit each neighborhood exactly once every five weeks. Residents must stack brush neatly at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the Monday of their scheduled week. The grapple trucks only make a single pass per zone, so late placement means waiting over a month for the next collection cycle.
Navigating the Seguin Recycling Program
Seguin's recycling program emphasizes a clean, single-stream approach. Residents should place rinsed plastic jugs, glass bottles, aluminum cans, and flattened cardboard directly into their recycling cart. The city explicitly bans placing recyclables inside plastic bags, as these tangle the sorting machinery. Notably, soiled paper, greasy pizza boxes, Styrofoam, and hazardous materials are also prohibited and will contaminate the load.
Household Hazardous Waste Door-to-Door Pick-Up
Properly disposing of dangerous chemicals is incredibly convenient in Seguin. Residents do not have to drive to a facility to discard paint, motor oil, or pool chemicals. Instead, you can schedule a door-to-door Household Hazardous Waste pickup through the Waste Connections mobile app, by calling 888-MY-HHW-PU, or via the HHW Solutions website. Once scheduled, simply place your leak-free, labeled items on your front porch or near your front door for safe Monday collection.
