Holiday Schedule
General Rule
If Christmas or New Year's Day falls on a weekday, your pickup will be delayed by one day for the remainder of that week.
Yard Waste Exception
The one-day delay applies to all carts: garbage, recycling, and organics.
Unlike many municipalities, Sacramento County maintains regular curbside collection on most other holidays, including Thanksgiving, Labor Day, and Independence Day.

Keep Loose Batteries Out
Batteries can combust when crushed inside collection trucks, causing dangerous fires. Never place any type of battery—household or car—into any of your curbside carts.
Look for the BPI Certification
When shopping for compostable bags to hold your kitchen food scraps, ensure they clearly display the BPI logo or state they are ASTM D6400 certified. The county's organics facility cannot process fake 'bio-degradable' plastics.
No Tanglers in the Blue Bin
Hoses, cords, chains, and wire clothes hangers act as 'tanglers' that jam the mechanical sorting equipment at the recycling facility. Throw these items in the garbage or donate them if they are still functional.

Winter
December - JanuaryThe county typically offers curbside holiday tree recycling following Christmas. Trees must be stripped of all ornaments, tinsel, and stands. Flocked trees cannot be composted and must be cut up and placed in the garbage cart.
Spring
March - OctoberSacramento County typically offers a free self-serve compost program during these months. Residents can visit Kiefer Landfill with their own shovels and containers to collect nutrient-rich compost for their spring gardening.

SB 1383 Compliance and Compostable Bags
To fight climate change and comply with California's SB 1383 mandate, Sacramento County requires all food scraps to be placed in the green organics cart. While some municipalities mandate that food waste be thrown in loose, Sacramento County uniquely allows residents to contain their food scraps in paper bags or BPI-certified (ASTM D6400) compostable bags to help reduce odors and pests.
Annual Bulky Waste Appointment
Every residential customer paying standard county rates is entitled to one free bulky waste pickup appointment per rolling 12-month period. Instead of a designated neighborhood clean-up week, you schedule this service at your convenience. The county will collect up to 5 cubic yards of material—roughly the size of a pickup truck bed loaded to the top of the cab.
Access to NARS and Local Facilities
Antelope residents have convenient access to the North Area Recovery Station (NARS) located nearby in North Highlands. This facility accepts general refuse, recyclables, and hard-to-handle large materials. Importantly, NARS features a dedicated Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) drop-off center where residents can safely dispose of up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of toxic chemicals per month for free.
