Local Tips & Community Info
Groot Industries Collection in Hanover Park
In Hanover Park, residential sanitation services are provided exclusively by Groot Industries. Weekly garbage collection is organized by specific neighborhood zones across the municipality. An important local ordinance dictates that residents must not place their refuse, recycling, or yard waste carts at the curb any earlier than 5:00 p.m. the evening before the scheduled pickup. After Groot empties the bins, all carts and uncollected items must be retrieved from the curb within 24 hours. When storing your containers during the week, Village regulations require them to be kept in the corner or side yard, and they must be fully screened from public view from the street.
Curbside Recycling and Public Works Drop-Off
Hanover Park utilizes a single-stream recycling system through Groot, allowing residents to combine paper, flattened cardboard, rigid plastics, and tin cans into a single cart. The Village asks homeowners to load their recycling containers carefully so that items like newspapers do not blow out onto neighborhood streets on windy days. For specialized items like CFL bulbs, fluorescent lights, and seasonal Christmas lights (accepted from November 1st through March 31st), the Village offers a dedicated drop-off program at the Public Works facility. Residents can drop off these specific recyclables Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Managing Yard Waste and Brush Piles
Disposing of organic landscaping debris requires following both Groot's procedures and local village guidelines. Yard waste such as grass clippings and leaves must be properly bagged in Kraft paper sacks or placed in specially marked rigid containers. If you choose to compost at home, remember that compost piles cannot be located in the front or corner side yards and must be actively maintained to control odors. For larger branches, Hanover Park operates a specific Brush Pickup Program alongside Groot's services. Residents must ensure that tree limbs are appropriately bundled, tied, and kept to the required lengths for collection.
Disposing of Large Household Bulk Items
If you are upgrading furniture or cleaning out your basement, Groot allows for the collection of certain bulk items. However, residents should verify size and weight limits before dragging a massive sleeper sofa or heavy appliance to the curb. It is also important to note that building and landscaping materials from DIY home projects can only be stored temporarily in your yard if a valid Village building permit has been issued. Otherwise, massive construction debris must be hauled away via a rented private dumpster or a pre-arranged special pickup.
Household Hazardous Waste Management
Hanover Park strictly prohibits residents from tossing hazardous chemicals, wet paints, motor oil, or electronic waste into their standard Groot bins. To accommodate the safe disposal of these toxic substances, the Village heavily promotes participation in the DuPage County Free Hazardous Waste Collection Events. Residents are encouraged to hold onto their volatile materials and safely transport them to these regional events to ensure compliance with Illinois environmental laws and to keep the local ecosystem protected.
