Yard Waste Exception

If Christmas Day or New Year's Day falls on a Wednesday, the automated recycling collection normally scheduled for that day will be pushed to Saturday.

All other holidays (e.g., Memorial Day, Labor Day) run on a normal schedule.

!Contamination Tips

Unbag Your Recyclables

Never place plastic grocery bags or garbage bags in your blue cart. Items must be placed loosely into the cart. Plastic bags wrap around the sorting gears at the recycling facility and will cause your cart to be tagged as contaminated trash.

Cardboard Belongs in the Cart

Midlothian does not accept cardboard boxes as part of its weekly bulk waste service. All cardboard must be completely flattened or cut down so it fits entirely inside your blue recycling cart with the lid completely closed.

Tag Your Appliances

If you are setting out a refrigerator, freezer, or air conditioner for your weekly bulk pickup, you must first hire a certified contractor to remove the freon. The appliance must have an official tag indicating the refrigerant was safely captured.

Seasonal Information

Spring

April

The city typically holds its first bi-annual Community Clean-Up event on the second Saturday in April, offering an excellent opportunity to dispose of excess bulk items.

Autumn

September to November

Fall leaves and grass clippings do not qualify for the bulk brush pickup. You must bag leaves and place them inside your black trash cart, or use purchased Pink Tags if setting bags outside the cart.

Winter

December to January

Christmas trees are collected as brush on the second collection day of your trash week. Ensure all decorations are removed, and cut trees taller than six feet in half before bundling.

About Midlothian Waste Management

Midlothian's Automated Cart Program

Following a 2026 ordinance update, the City of Midlothian transitioned to an automated cart system managed by Waste Connections. Residents are issued a 95-gallon black cart for regular household garbage and a 95-gallon blue cart for recycling. Trash is collected twice weekly—either Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday depending on your zone—while recycling is picked up every other Wednesday. Because collection is fully automated, carts must be placed with wheels facing your home and positioned at least three feet apart.

The Pink Tag System for Extra Trash

Your black trash cart has a strict weight limit of 170 pounds, and the lid must close completely. If you have excess waste that cannot fit inside the bin, you cannot simply leave it on the curb. Midlothian enforces a 'Pink Tag' system where residents must purchase adhesive tags for $1.04 each at the Utility Billing office at City Hall. Any extra bagged trash placed outside the cart must have a pink tag visibly attached and be placed at least three feet from your regular bin.

Weekly Bulk and Brush Collection

Waste Connections provides weekly bulk item and brush collection based on designated neighborhood routes. You are allowed to set out one large bulk item per week, such as a piece of furniture, an appliance, or one fence panel. For brush, limbs must be cut to three feet or less, be under six inches in diameter, and be securely bundled weighing no more than 35 pounds. A maximum of two cubic yards of bundled brush is allowed per weekly pickup.

Household Hazardous Waste Vouchers

Midlothian partners with the City of Fort Worth Environmental Collection Center (ECC) for the safe disposal of chemicals, paint, and automotive fluids. Residents can purchase a $40 voucher from the Utility Billing Office to drop off materials at the ECC facility in Fort Worth. Additionally, the city hosts an annual 'Mobile Crud Cruiser' event between March and November where residents can use their purchased vouchers to dispose of hazardous waste locally before the trailer reaches capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I have extra bags of trash that won't fit in my black cart?

You cannot place extra bags on top of or next to your cart without a tag. You must purchase a Pink Tag for $1.04 from the Utility Billing office at 215 N. 8th Street for each extra bag. Place tagged bags at least three feet away from your cart on collection day.

Can I put grass clippings and leaves out for brush pickup?

No. Grass clippings and leaves do not qualify for the bulk brush pickup. They must be bagged and placed inside your black 95-gallon trash cart, or placed next to the cart using officially purchased pink tags.

How does recycling collection work in Midlothian?

Recycling is collected every other Wednesday using the automated blue 95-gallon carts. Make sure all recyclables are clean, dry, loose (not in plastic bags), and unshredded. Cardboard must be broken down to fit inside with the lid closed.

Do seniors get a discount on trash service in Midlothian?

Yes. Residents aged 65 and older who are the primary account holders qualify for free recycling and a 10% discount on their trash service. You must contact Utility Billing or Waste Connections to update your account to senior status.
