!Contamination Tips

Skip the Plastic Bags

Never place your recyclables inside plastic grocery bags or garbage bags. Always keep items loose inside the green cart. Plastic films jam the sorting gears at Republic Services' recovery facility.

Say No to Shredded Paper

While regular mixed paper and cardboard are highly encouraged, shredded paper is completely prohibited in Prosper's recycling carts. The tiny paper shreds slip through the sorting screens and contaminate glass and plastic bales.

Keep Personal Cans Inside

Do not set out personal, store-bought trash cans at the curb to handle extra waste. Republic Services is strictly contracted to service the official gray carts. If you leave a personal can on the curb, the driver will treat it as a bulk item and throw it into the truck.

Seasonal Information

Spring

March to May

The Town typically hosts its Annual Spring Cleanup Event, providing an additional opportunity for residents to clear out major household clutter and larger-than-normal brush piles.

Summer

July

During Independence Day weekend, keep in mind that Saturday bulk drop-off operations at the Public Works facility are often suspended.

Winter

November to January

Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day all trigger a one-day service delay for the remainder of the holiday week. Saturday bulk service is also suspended during these holiday weekends.

About Prosper Waste Management

Automated Cart System and Spacing Rules

The Town of Prosper utilizes an automated collection system operated by Republic Services. Residents are issued a 95-gallon gray cart for standard trash and a 95-gallon green cart for single-stream recycling. To ensure the mechanical arms can properly service your bins, carts must be placed with their wheels facing the curb and must sit at least three feet apart from each other, vehicles, and mailboxes. Be warned: do not use personal trash cans, as Republic Services will consider them bulk waste and permanently remove them.

Weekly Bulk Waste Convenience

Unlike many municipalities that limit bulk collection to once a month, Prosper allows residents up to four cubic yards of bulk waste and brush every single week, coinciding directly with your regular trash day. Acceptable items include old furniture, tied 4-foot lengths of carpet, up to 10 additional trash bags, and appliances. If setting out refrigerators or freezers, you must attach a certification tag proving the Freon was safely removed by a technician.

Annual Doorstep HHW Collection

Disposing of hazardous materials in Prosper is highly convenient, though limited in frequency. Every household is entitled to one free Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection per year. Instead of driving to a remote facility, residents simply fill out an online form and email it to [email protected] to schedule a pickup. Republic Services will mail you the required bags, allowing you to easily dispose of paints, chemicals, and pool supplies right from your porch.

Saturday Bulk Drop-Off Alternative

If you missed your weekly curbside collection or have more bulk materials than the four-cubic-yard limit allows, you have an alternative. The Town of Prosper operates a Saturday Bulk Collection Drop-Off site at the Prosper Public Works facility on 601 W 5th Street. The site is open every Saturday morning from 8:00 a.m. to noon, giving residents a free and easy way to clear out large items over the weekend.

How do I request an extra trash or recycling cart in Prosper?

If you consistently run out of room, you can request additional carts by calling the solid waste division at 945-234-1924 or emailing [email protected]. There is a monthly fee of $7.37 for an extra trash cart and $3.20 for an extra recycling cart.

Does Prosper offer hazardous waste disposal?

Yes, residents receive one free Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) curbside collection per year. You must fill out the required form from the Town's website and email it to [email protected] to schedule a pickup.

What are the rules for throwing away a refrigerator?

You can set your refrigerator out during your weekly bulk pickup. However, a certified technician must first remove the Freon/refrigerant, and the appliance must have an official tag indicating the hazardous chemicals have been safely extracted.
